Mod Father Paul Weller showed an almost packed Dundee crowd why he’s been on top of the music industry since fronting The Jam, The Style Council and a solo career spanning 45 years.
Weller took to the stage on a rainy damp night at the Dundee Caird Hall to announce, “We’re going to play a long set tonight”. Thanking the fans who kept tickets for two years, he gave his long-time followers a performance which would last for two hours covering a 28-song set list.
With his swishing silver hair and geared out in his pullover, chinos and white trainers Weller was accompanied on stage with his five-piece band consisting of long-time guitarist Steve Cradock, Andy Croft, Tom Heel and twin drummers Steve Pilgrim and Ben Gordelier who got the night off with a high energy opener…White Sky.
No fancy stage setting was needed, but Weller seemed to make references in support to what was happening with the war in Ukraine by painting the twin drums in the Ukrainian colour along with a Ukraine flag on one of the amps.
With songs comprised from Style Council favourite, Have You Ever Had It Blue alongside older Favourites like Stanley Road, Hilarity seemed to break out from Weller when a member of the crowd started waving one of his trainers in the air, Welller quipped “I’ll hold the gig up, shall I, to sign this geezer’s shoe?”.
As the night drew to a close it was fans favourites that got the fans singing along to You Do Something To Me, Wild Wood and Jam
classics such as That’s Entertainment, Town Called Malice and Start.
